—but none of those names seemed to suit me when our DID finally came to light.
at first, when we were all “getting to know each other,” my fellow alters referred to me as MPDG (a.k.a. Manic Pixie Dream Girl).
because, you know, i’m the “extroverted” one. (or, more accurately, i’m a slightly more extroverted introvert, which is about as extroverted as any of us get. ) anyway. i make jokes. i’m quirky. i’m carefree. i’m hopelessly optimistic, and i’m into all that spiritual stuff.
but i didn’t really like the name the others gave me, because—you know—I have a bit more depth than your run-of-the-mill MPDG.
so, i decided on a new name. a final name. a name to end all names:
clementine montaigne.
the surname, “montaigne,” in honor of the great Michel de Montaigne, the father of the essay and my truest forbearer.
the forename, “clementine,” in honor of the great Kate Winslet, whose performance in The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind challenged the hollywood trope of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl.
because, you know, the roots of my identity run deep. i’m like a mushroom. or a potato. there’s a gloriously tangled web of wisdom hiding beneath the surface, if you’ve got the wherewithal to look.
**NOTE on video:
clementine = vince
sam = howard moon

“His mind was freshly inclined toward sorrow; toward the fact that the world was full of sorrow; that everyone labored under some burden of sorrow; that all were suffering; that whatever way one took in this world, one must try to remember that all were suffering (none content; all wronged, neglected, overlooked, misunderstood), and therefore one must do what one could to lighten the load of those with whom one came into contact; that his current state of sorrow was not uniquely his, not at all, but, rather, its like had been felt, would be felt, by scores of others, in all times, in every time, and must not be prolonged or exaggerated, because, in this state, he could be of no help to anyone and, given that his position in the world situated him to be either of great help, or great harm, it would not do to stay low, if he could help it.”
